Meet Dr. Bill Layman

I am passionate about working with patients to create a life-changing smile. I am humbled every day that patients place their trust in me to accomplish their orthodontic goals. It is something that I do not take lightly.

Raised in a small Virginia farm town, I worked during high school as a farmhand, loaded dog feed, mowed church lawns, and pumped gas. I used my wages to help pay for my braces — an experience that set me on the path to becoming an orthodontist.

After graduating from The Citadel with a Bachelor of Science in biology, cum laude, I served as a paratrooper with the Army’s 82nd Airborne. While in dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina, I was elected and served four years as class president while earning my Doctorate of Dental Medicine. An orthodontic resident at Vanderbilt University, I was part of the cleft palate and cranio-facial anomalies team, and received extensive training in the dental treatments of obstructive sleep apnea. I also served as chief resident. Now I lecture to the orthodontic residents at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and the Medical University of South Carolina.

Outside the Office

I have lived and worked in Clearwater since I opened Straighten Up Orthodontics in 2005. My wife Andrea is a third-generation Floridian and a graduate of Clearwater High School. We have a son who is into Minecraft, tennis, baseball, and computer animation. My family and I love to travel and explore the beauty that Florida offers. I also like to stay active by playing tennis and golf, and even competed in the 2007 Ironman 70.3 Cancun and qualified for and competed in the Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

I believe that those who are blessed with the opportunity to give back should do so. Whether it be treasures or talents, giving back will repay you tenfold. I am a founding member of the Community Dental Clinic and serve as the clinical chair. I have also been involved as president of our local Rotary club, and participated in providing a tremendous amount of funding to local nonprofits through our fundraising efforts.
